Class Action Certification

Grizzly Bear Class Action Settlement Approved

On June 15, 2026, the Supreme Court of British Columbia approved a $3.7-million settlement in the grizzly bear hunting ban class action brought by guide outfitter Ron Fleming against the Province of British Columbia.

The Court found the settlement to be fair, reasonable and in the best interests of the class. The settlement resolves the class action and provides compensation to eligible class members in exchange for a release of the claims against the Province.

The Province ended grizzly bear hunting throughout British Columbia on December 18, 2017. One year later, Ron Fleming commenced the civil claim on behalf of affected guide outfitters, seeking compensation for the economic losses resulting from the closure.

In March 2023, the Court certified the lawsuit as a class action, allowing the claims of eligible guide outfitters to proceed together. The parties signed the $3.7-million settlement agreement on March 13, 2026, subject to court approval. Class members were then formally notified of the proposed settlement and given an opportunity to object before the approval hearing.

The next step is court approval of the plan for administering and distributing the settlement funds. Once that plan has been approved, eligible class members will receive information about how to apply for their share of the settlement.

The class action addressed compensation for the economic harm caused by the closure. The settlement does not reopen the grizzly bear hunt.

GOABC recognizes Ron Fleming’s leadership, persistence, and service to the guide outfitting industry throughout this lengthy process. We also acknowledge the class members and supporters who stood behind the case. Their collective effort achieved class certification and brought the Province to a public settlement.

GOABC continues to believe that decisions affecting wildlife, livelihoods and rural communities must be transparent, accountable, and grounded in the best available science.

The settlement agreement, Notice of Settlement Approval and other relevant court documents are available below. Additional documents related to the administration and distribution of the settlement will be added as they become available.
