“Soul of the Leopard” by Bosveld Jacobs

Donated by Stewart Fraser, Itcha Mountain Outfitters

During 1958, Bosveld assisted his father in eliminating problem leopard.  After university he returned to Waterberg and as a cattle rancher he soon mastered the art of setting gin traps, capturing cages and rifles at the remains of leopard kills.  Many of his fellow cattle ranchers relied on him for eliminating problem leopard. Bosveld opted on professional hunting as a career.  He experimented with leopard hunting techniques and soon, locally and abroad, the name Bosveld Jacobs featured in many discussions, regarding leopard.  His success rate remains unsurpassed.

Leopards fascinated Bosveld and his inquisitive mind combined with his academic capabilities enabled him to make the most fascinating observations regarding leopard conduct.  He spent a lot of time on foot in the bush; following trails of leopard footprints to locate their dens, routes, marking posts and home ranges. In “Soul of the Leopard” Bosveld shares his immense knowledge, gained over a period of almost sixty years in the bush.  Many of his assertions differ from generally accepted theories on leopard behaviour.  However, he accepts the challenge.
