From Member Mailout to Thousands of Subscribers
When GOABC first began publishing Western Guidelines, it wasn’t created as a public magazine. It started as a newsletter for members—a practical tool to keep outfitters connected across British Columbia, share association updates, and reflect what was happening in the field.
In those early days, the reach was intentionally focused. The publication was part of the internal fabric of the association—written by and for the membership.
But as GOABC grew, the publication grew too!
Over time, Western Guidelines evolved into a more polished magazine—and the readership naturally expanded with it. What began as an internal newsletter started to serve a broader purpose: sharing GOABC’s stories, values, and perspectives with a wider hunting audience.
With that shift came a new marker of success: not just who it was written for, but how many people wanted to receive it.
And while the totals rise and fall year to year, the big picture is clear: the magazine has moved far beyond its original role as a simple member update. It’s now a publication with a sustained audience—one that reflects the reach and relevance GOABC has built over 60 years.
Why this evolution matters
Distribution isn’t just about circulation—it’s about connection.
Every subscription is a thread back to GOABC:
to the people, places, and wildlife that shape guided hunting in BC, Yukon and NWT
to the stories that preserve traditions and standards
to the conservation ethic that guides the work
From a member-focused newsletter to a magazine delivered to thousands of subscribers, the evolution of our publication tells a larger GOABC story: growth, credibility, and an expanding community that cares deeply about the BC, Yukon and NWT hunting experience—and the wild places that make it possible.
